Kan yama kan #2: Self-Narrative in Oral History with Tara AlDughaither

We love stories at Ward, and that’s why we started the Kan yama kan initiative in collaboration with Unootha. The main goal is to introduce everyone to new tools and media that they can use to tell their own stories.

Every month, we host a new guest who introduces us to their medium of interest. Our second guest was Tara AlDughaither, the founder of Sawt Asura. Tara is a curator and researcher interested in the arts of the Arabia peninsula, especially the immaterial heritage that involve women’s contribution. Tara’s workshop was conducted on Thursday (March 25, 2021), wherein Tara introduced us to the history and theory of self-narrative and oral history, and how both of them are connected. She also introduced us to Sawt Asura, and how she was inspired to create it after learning about oral history of the Gulf and Saudi.

After briefly introducing us to the basis of oral history, Tara introduced us to the basic steps of recording and archiving sound: stories, interviews, and songs. This allowed the attendees to practice what they’ve learned in a 30-minute exercise that Tara prepared for beginners who are learning how to contribute in archiving oral history.

We’re excited to share more tools and techniques that enable you to tell your stories. We’ll be announcing our third guest soon. Stay tuned!
